Byte Size Converter

Convert decimal and binary byte units through a byte base with adjustable display precision.

Conversions are calculated locally. No file is read or uploaded.

Byte size conversion

Non-negative decimal values are accepted. A dot or comma may be used as the decimal separator.

Decimal versus binary units

SI units use powers of 1,000: 1 kB = 1,000 bytes, 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes. IEC binary units use powers of 1,024: 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes, 1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes. A file manager may display binary values with decimal-looking labels, so check the unit before comparing sizes.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a “1 GB” drive smaller in my operating system?

Manufacturers commonly use decimal GB, while some operating systems display binary GiB values with GB labels. The underlying byte count is consistent.

Are very large values exact?

JavaScript numbers have limited integer precision. This MVP keeps arithmetic in floating point and documents that limitation rather than claiming exact arbitrary-precision bytes for every fractional input.

Does this tool measure a real file?

No. It converts a number you enter. It does not read files.
