Text is measured locally in the browser and is never uploaded or stored.

How words and characters are counted

A word is a segment containing a letter or number. Repeated spaces, tabs, and newlines do not create extra words. Characters are counted as user-perceived graphemes where Intl.Segmenter is available, so many emoji and combined characters count as one visible character.

Reading time uses 200 words per minute; speaking time uses 130 words per minute. Both are estimates and are rounded up to at least one minute when the text is not empty.

Frequently asked questions

Why do character counts differ from another editor?

Some editors count UTF-16 code units, while this tool counts graphemes. Emoji and accented characters often explain the difference.

Does the text leave my browser?

No. Counting happens locally and the text is not saved by Mookat.

Can I set a limit?

Yes. Optional word and character limits show remaining counts, but the text is never truncated automatically.
