How to redact sensitive information in an image

Load an image, choose a redaction method, and drag over each sensitive area. Use solid color for strong concealment. Export the image and inspect the preview before sharing it.

Solid color versus pixelation

Solid color replaces every pixel in the area with an opaque fill. Pixelation reduces the area to large blocks and scales it back, which may still leak information for some patterns. Solid color is the safer option for highly sensitive data.

How to make redaction permanent

The export renders a new bitmap from the source image with each redaction drawn into the pixels. The output contains no HTML or SVG overlay that can be removed to reveal the original area. Re-encoding also avoids copying the original metadata chunks.

Privacy and security considerations

Processing happens in the browser. No image is uploaded. Redaction is not a guarantee of anonymity: verify the final file and consider whether the visible context still reveals sensitive information.

Frequently asked questions

Can I undo a redaction?

Yes, while the session is open. Undo and redo use an in-memory history that is not saved anywhere.

Is pixelation safe for text?

Not always. Pixelation can leave recognizable shapes. Use solid color for identity numbers, addresses, and credentials.

Are dimensions preserved?

Yes. Redaction areas use the original image coordinate system and export at the original dimensions.
