How to view EXIF metadata

Select a JPEG, PNG, or WebP image. The tool reads supported EXIF and PNG text fields locally. File dimensions are read by the browser decoder. Fields that are not present are not invented.

How metadata removal works

For JPEG, supported metadata segments (APP1/EXIF/XMP, APP13/IPTC, APP12, APP15, and comments) are removed while image and decoding segments are preserved. For PNG, the image is decoded and exported as a new PNG through canvas, which drops ancillary chunks such as text and EXIF. JPEG output may lose segments not recognized by this tool; the report does not claim byte-for-byte preservation.

What information can EXIF contain?

Camera make and model, capture timestamps, exposure settings, software, orientation, and GPS coordinates. Some files contain additional vendor-specific fields that this MVP does not interpret.

Why GPS metadata matters

GPS coordinates can reveal where a photo was taken, including a home or workplace. Remove metadata before sharing photos when location privacy matters.

Supported image formats

  • JPEG: EXIF reading and supported metadata segment removal.
  • PNG: text/EXIF fields that the parser recognizes, plus removal by re-encoding.
  • WebP: file information only in this MVP; removal is disabled.
  • GIF, SVG, HEIC, and others: unsupported for this tool.

Frequently asked questions

Is every possible metadata field removed?

No. The tool removes the metadata segments and fields it knows about. Do not treat the result as a guarantee that every proprietary byte of metadata is gone.

Why is removal disabled for WebP?

This MVP does not have a verified WebP metadata removal path, so the button is kept disabled rather than making an unsafe claim.

Are files uploaded?

No. Parsing and removal run in the browser. No upload request is made.
